Pope Francis And The Future Of The Church

Pope FrancisWhat: An Evening Discussion about Pope Francis and the Future Of The Church

When: November 19, 2017, 7:00 PM

Where: Community Center

Who: Friar Adam Bunnell, OFM Conv.

The Men of Epiphany will present Friar Adam Bunnell, OFM Conv., who will lead an evening discussion on Pope Francis and the Future Of The Church. Pope Francis, the first non-European pope since the early days of Christianity, is proving to be a source of hope for some and despair for others. Certainly, the emphasis on social justice, the environment, the solidarity of all peoples are all Gospel themes of long standing and are but an echo not only of the Gospel but also of recent papal teaching. On the other hand, some see Francis’ prophetic stance as baffling and cause that the church is changing the unchangeable. It is perhaps no coincidence that he bears the name of the thirteen-century saint who turned Christianity upside down and continues to call the world to a greater vision of itself in God! Then, as now, those whose authority finds itself shaken by the prophetic are interested in taming the Spirit by encasing it in rules and predictability. Pope Francis’ God of Surprises is a challenge!

Friar Adam BunnellThe evening’s discussion will be led by Friar Adam Bunnell, who is a Conventual (Mt. St. Francis, IN) Franciscan who studied and worked with the Jesuits at St. Louis University, Regis University in Denver and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He also studied and worked in Germany, Austria, and Italy as well as a frequent visitor to India working in inter-religious dialogue for the Franciscans. He spent several years in Assisi before returning to Bellarmine University as a special assistant to the President (Jay McGowan).

Friar Adam now is living into old age with a focus on prayer and contemplation, reading, thinking and writing. He is currently a resident of St. Paul’s Friary at the parish of that name on Dixie Highway. Before deciding to sink some roots in Louisville, KY, Father Bunnell traveled the world through his teaching, scholarship and ministry career.

Father Bunnell served for several years as General Delegate for Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue for the Conventual Franciscans. He has taught the history and spirituality of all three Abrahamic faiths and served as chaplain at universities in the U.S. and around the world. He is the author of Before Infallibility: Liberal Catholicism in Biedermeier Vienna as well as articles on pastoral topics.
