Obituary for Matt Ballard

Matt BallardMatthew Beam Ballard Jr., 85, passed away peacefully from a long illness on Tuesday September 12, 2017. Matthew was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 11, 1932 to the late Matthew Beam Ballard and Mary Isabel McCollum Ballard.

Matt grew up in Louisville and was affectionately called “Red” by childhood friends. He graduated from Flaget High School in 1950 and attended Bellarmine College. He began a career with the United States Government and served 35 years for the Defense Department as a Cartographic Supervisor where he helped map the moon for the Federal Defense mapping agency. He married Mary Margaret Houpt Ballard in 1959. Matt and Mary Margaret were founding members of Epiphany Church and were one of the first residents of Douglass Hills. After marrying he became a father to his only daughter Kathleen. He later became a grandfather to 3 wonderful children whom he cherished.

After retirement he joined his wife in real estate with Century 21 Joe Guy Hagan Realtors, where they worked as a successful team for many years. Matt enjoyed years of travel and camping all over the United States. He was a member of the River City Square Dance Club and enjoyed square dancing and boating. Matt always had a smile and a helping hand for friends and neighbors. In later years he enjoyed motor homing and extended trips to Florida.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Isabel Ballard, and his son-in-law Michael Q. Murray. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Margaret Houpt Ballard; his daughter, Kathleen Ballard Murray(Mike); grandchildren Patrick Quinlan, Katherine “Kate” Isabel, and William “Will” Matthew Murray of Sierra Madre, California.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday September 18, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Epiphany Catholic Church, 914 Old Harrods Creek Road, Louisville, KY. Visitation will be Sunday September 17, 2017 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Ratterman Funeral Home East, 12900 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, KY.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts and contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
