Sing 2x: Prepare ye the Way of the Lord... Invite congregation to join in 2x...

We are all doing a lot of preparing this time of year, right? Christmas shopping, wrapping presents, planning parties and family get-togethers, baking fat-free goodies - but hopefully, not any locusts and wild honey, unless you're preparing to go on the John the Baptist diet!

Our scriptures for this Second Sunday of Advent take this time of preparing to a whole new level.

They invite us to ask two important questions: 1. Just what are we preparing for? And 2. What are we preparing the world for? The answer to both questions is the same...

In our personal lives and for our world, we are preparing for nothing less that God's coming! In the desert, prepare the way of the Lord, Isaiah cries out! One mightier than I is coming after me, proclaims John the Baptist!

It is God's coming with glory and salvation that we are preparing for - a coming, Saint Peter tells us, that will bring about a new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness and justice dwell.

So, how do we prepare ourselves and our world as we await God's coming?

In our personal lives, both John the Baptist and Saint Peter could not be clearer: we must repent of our sins and conduct ourselves in holiness and devotion.

We can't begin to prepare the world for God's coming unless our own lives are examples of holiness, goodness, gospel values, and deep devotion to Christ and His Reign.

In terms of our role in preparing the world, Catholic Social Teaching provides us some guidance.

We are to both denounce and announce!

We must denounce evil and injustice - whatever violates the rights and dignity of persons, especially of the poor, the least, and the weak.

We denounce abject poverty and income inequality! We denounce racism and discrimination of any kind! We denounce all forms of sexual harassment and assault! We denounce ethnic cleansing that forced 625,000 Rohingya to flee Myanmar! We denounce human trafficking and slavery! We denounce disregard for the environment! And the list goes on.

But in the same breath, we must also announce glad tidings! We announce the Good News of God's patient and saving love for humanity! We announce the inherent dignity of every human being! We announce respect for our common home, the earth! We announce the possibility of a new world order where justice and peace rule! We announce hope, as God's Reign will come!

Let us then, my sisters and brothers, strive to live holy lives - denouncing injustice and announcing God's Reign - as together we sing Prepare ye the Way of the Lord!
