CHRISTMAS EVE CHILDREN’S MASS

Epiphany Catholic Church

Louisville, KY, USA

December 24, 2017

When you wish upon a star,

Makes no difference who you are,

Anything your heart desires,

Will come to you.

If your heart is in your dream,

No request is too extreme,

When you wish upon a star,

As dreamers do.

We are all very familiar with this classic Disney song...

Perhaps you and I have even wished upon a star at different times in our lives.

But the star we think about tonight is the one which shone over Bethlehem on that very first Christmas...

This star points to the fulfillment of all our wishes, dreams, and desires: the gift of God's Son, Jesus, born of Mary this holy night.

(Lights go dim. Children should all be in back of Worship center, waiting to enter. There should be an adult/point person at each aisle, and one at the front of Worship center to help guide children in)

This is the star in the sky.

(Star enters from center back holding light above head as they walk towards altar)

These are the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Shepherds come down w/sheep)

This is the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Angel comes from right side aisle, house lights get brighter)

This is the donkey with precious load, trudging the long and weary road,

Looked on by the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Mary, Joseph, and donkey come from left side aisle)

This is the inn, where the only room, was a stable out in the lamplit gloom.

For the donkey and his precious load, who trudged the long and weary road,

Looked on by the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Innkeepers come from either side holding pillars that represent the stable)

This is the ox and this is the ass, who saw such wonders come to pass,

At the darkened inn where the only room, was a stable out in the lamplit gloom,

For the donkey and his precious load, who trudged the long and weary road,

Looked on by the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Animals come from right side)

This is the manger warm with hay, wherein a newborn baby lay,

This is the ox and this is the ass, who saw such wonders come to pass,

At the darkened inn where the only room, was a stable out in the lamplit gloom,

For the donkey and his precious load, who trudged the long and weary road,

Looked on by the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Manger dressed in brown robes comes from left aisle and sits underneath star)

This is the gold and fragrant myrrh, and frankincense, the gifts that were,

Placed by the manger warm with hay, wherein a newborn baby lay,

This is the ox and this is the ass, who saw such wonders come to pass,

At the darkened inn where the only room, was a stable out in the lamplit gloom,

For the donkey and his precious load, who trudged the long and weary road,

Looked on by the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Wise men spread across center aisle, face community and hold up gifts, lights get brighter)

These are the wise men come from afar, who also saw and followed the star,

Bearing the gold and fragrant myrrh, and frankincense, the gifts that were,

Placed by the manger warm with hay, wherein a newborn baby lay,

This is the ox and this is the ass, who saw such wonders come to pass,

At the darkened inn where the only room, was a stable out in the lamplit gloom,

For the donkey and his precious load, who trudged the long and weary road,

Looked on by the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(Wise men turn towards altar and lay gifts at the feet of the manger)

This is the child that was born.

(Lights are completely up as Mary hands Jesus to the manger. There will be a silent moment as all look upon the baby)

This is the Christ child born to be king,

(manger stands up, holding Jesus in front of star, more angels join if needed)

while hosts of heavenly angels sing,

These are the wise men come from afar, who also saw and followed the star,

(Wise men kiss baby and walk off center aisle, lights dim)

Bearing the gold and fragrant myrrh, and frankincense, the gifts that were,

Placed by the manger warm with hay, wherein a newborn baby lay,

This is the ox and this is the ass, who saw such wonders come to pass,

(The ox and ass kiss baby and walk off right)

At the darkened inn where the only room, was a stable out in the lamplit gloom,

(Innkeepers with pillars walk off sides)

For the donkey and his precious load, who trudged the long and weary road,

(Mary, Joseph, and Donkey kiss baby and walk off left, lights dim)

Looked on by the angel shining bright, who came to the shepherds watching by night,

That saw the star in the sky.

(lead angel kisses baby and all angels walk off center)

Still shines the star in the sky.

(manger stands up and holds baby Jesus directly in front of star, lights go out to show Jesus and star)

It is upon this star, my sisters and brothers, that we are given far more than anything we could ever wish for. We are given the gift of Jesus, who is the fulfillment of all desire!
