Today we went to Casa de La Memoria, a museum that tells the history of Guatemala. It began by telling the story of the Mayan culture, and the richness and beauty it provided to Guatemala. It continues by sharing the story of Spanish colonization and how they intentionally tried to wipe out the Mayan culture. We learned about the 36-year genocide against the Mayan communities and women but ended with powerful stories of strength and resistance amongst the Guatemalan people to fight for their country, freedom, and culture.
Back at Valley we did a little painting and had more time to build relationships with the kids. We taught them our beloved: “ We are the Church”, and ended the day with a game of volleyball with the girls. In our evening reflection we talked about the questions that have been arising within us about the injustices/ poverty we have seen glimpses of. We lifted them up to God knowing we are only the workers, not the master builders. Trusting that we are planting seedlings that will hold future promise. Another full and powerful day.
