The two grant recipients are Love City Inc.’s “Merriment Thrift Store” project and St. Louis Cemetery’s identification of black Catholic military veterans’ graves project!
The Annual Grant program provides grants (typically $5,000-$15,000) to organizations that encourage charitable action or promote social change.
Love City, Inc. was awarded $11,000 to renovate a building on its campus on 25th St. in west Louisville’s Portland neighborhood and transform it into the “Merriment Thrift Store”, an affordable shopping destination and community gathering place for anyone living in that neighborhood. Details about how Epiphany parishioners can get involved in the renovation, grand opening, and operation of the thrift store will be forthcoming from Teri Holland, parish sponsor.
St. Louis Cemetery was awarded $2,500 to assist with its project to identify and verify the names, birth dates, and burial dates of 35
Catholic individuals who appear to have served in the U.S. Colored Troops and Buffalo Soldiers on the Union side during the Civil War while several others are believed to have served in World War I. Each of these veterans is entitled to a grave marker provided by and funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Epiphany’s grant monies will focus specifically on recovering and verifying military records of these veterans from the National Archives. Our funds will cover the cost of this often tedious work. Overall, the project is intended to restore dignity to the people buried there and enable descendants to locate and honor their ancestors. Opportunities for involvement in this project will be forthcoming from Gerri Ann Cassidy, parish sponsor.
