About First Responder Ministry
Do you have a medical background? Would you be willing to volunteer to be a “first responder” when a
medical incident occurs at a liturgy?
The Worship Committee, in conjunction with the Health and Wellness Committee, is seeking volunteers
for a “first responder” ministry. Our goal is to recruit people with a medical background (RN, CNA, MD
EMT, PD, FF, etc.) who normally attend the same Mass each weekend. Volunteers would be trained in
responding to the needs of persons experiencing a medical episode during one of our Church liturgies.
They would know where our First Aid supplies, AED, and wheelchairs are located. They
would be responsible for calling 911 and providing a brief report of the parishioner’s symptoms and the
care they were given. They would sit in designated spaces in the Worship Center so as to be easily
identified if the need arises.
Our first order of business is to gather as a group and formulate a protocol for responding to the
involved parishioner and notifying the celebrant that an incident has occurred. Once our protocol is in
place and has been approved by parish leadership, a training updating volunteers in CPR and AED use will be
scheduled. Given a sufficient number of volunteers, 2-3 responders would be scheduled at the Mass of
their choice on a rotating basis.
Thank you for considering this opportunity. We want all of our parishioners to be well-cared
for in an emergency.
