Creation Care May 2023 Event

The Environmental Concerns Committee held the LEARN portion of its three-part Creation Care event over the May 20/21 weekend. Spread out through the Connector, parishioners coming and going to the 5:30 p.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Masses took advantage of the conveniently placed information displays to broaden their knowledge on specific environmental issues.
Displays included an overview of how important trees are to the health of our planet, how to help pollinators keep our forests healthy, and how plants, such as trees and mushrooms work together. Air quality was also of interest to many as they learned why Louisville has an air quality problem, especially in the west end. Quite a few people were interested in the Beargrass Creek display as they have memories of how it was when they were children. They learned how pollution has degraded it and what’s being done to restore it. The display on parks surprised some people who didn’t realize how many quality parks our community has. Several people were glad to see there are ways individuals can get involved with the various parks. Laudato Si’ and Pope Francis drew a lot of attention as many people took time to have their photo taken with our pontiff. A number of them commented that they had read Laudato Si’ and were grateful that the Pope has highlighted environmental care as an issue Christians need to be active in.
“It’s not surprising that so many of our parishioners are concerned about what they see happening to the environment here in Louisville and around the world,” said Mark Reilly, chair of the Environmental Concerns Committee. “Our committee is glad to put together these programs to help people understand the scope of the problem and the obligation that Pope Francis makes clear we all have to care for God’s creation.”
